Cartha QP v Dundee HS Friday 18th March 2022.

Disappointing outcome for CQP as they lose vital home game to Dundee.

The match took place under the lights in good dry conditions with little or no rain present. This game had long been earmarked as one which CQP had to win. The game could not have got off to a better start for CQP when Sam Graham scored in the right corner after good support play. Wayne Burrows converted and CQP were off to a good start after only three minutes of play. With only thirteen minutes on the clock things looked even better for CQP when they scored again courtesy of Max Summers, this time in the other corner and Wayne Burrows again added the extra two points to leave CQP with a fourteen point lead. These two scores seemed to have prompted Dundee into action and with only two further minutes played the Dundee left wing scored a try which their fullback converted. Seven minutes later saw Dundee bite further into CQP’s lead from a penalty again converted by their experienced number 15. Just before the break Dundee had another chance to reduce CQP’s lead but this time the penalty conversion was unsuccessful.

Seven minutes into the second half saw Dundee cut CQP’s lead to one point with a successful penalty. With thirteen minutes played in the second half Wayne Burrows was yellow carded and this was followed by a successfully converted Dundee try to put them in to a 20-14 lead. Six minutes later the score moved to 27-14 when a through kick from Dundee saw the ball bounce before the CQP defender could gather spin into the arms of the pursuing Dundee attacker. With fifteen minutes left to play Dundee had another penalty conversion. Just before the end CQP put in a fine cross field kick which was just slightly long with the ball going into touch just a few yards short of the Dundee line. This proved to be the final act in the game.

Full time CQP14 Dundee HS 30.

There was nothing lucky about this Dundee victory. They rallied well after their early setback and played with a passion which was not really evident from CQP from the sidelines. CQP gave away too many penalties and the Dundee place kicker took advantage of six out of seven opportunities.

CQP now have five games left to play with four of them away starting with Stirling Wolves this Saturday. If we are to retain our place in this league we will have to improve our discipline, keep fifteen players on the park for eighty minutes and play with more passion than was displayed in this match.

Elsewhere Stirling v Watson’s resulted in a thirty one point apiece outcome which saw both teams obtain three points. Watson’s now have a four point lead over CQP and have two very difficult games left in Biggar and Heriots both of whom are still chasing the leaders spot.
