Stirling wolves v Cartha Queen’s Park 16th Nov. 2019.

The game kicked off on a bitterly cold day. This game was due to be followed by a pro6 match v The Southern nights. Outcome of game determined by penalty decision at end by CQP.

CQP went into this game on a high following their comprehensive victory over Melrose the previous Saturday. Ewen Campbell was back in the squad with Tony Lopez making way. In the forwards Ryan Howie was missing. His place was taken by Michael Nellaney who dropped into the wing forward berth being replace by Ethan Paterson with Pete Barton coming back from injury going onto the bench. The programme which consisted of team lists on one side of an A4 sheet showed a completely fictitious CQP back division.

CQP opened well with Wayne Burrows converting two penalties into six points in the first six minutes. After fifteen minutes Stirling opened their account with a converted try and then scored a second ten minutes later. With half an hour played Big G scored for CQP. The try was converted to move the score to 14-13 in Stirling’s favour. Thibault Pin then put CQP into the lead with an unconverted try and just before half time Stirling slotted a penalty to leave the score at 18-17 to CQP.

With only ten minutes of the second half played Stirling retook the lead before Sam Harrison scored CQP’s third try when Lachie Stout who had come on in place of Bosco Lafon at scrum half put in a lovely chip into the in goal area which Sam Harrison caught and touched down. This was followed by a CQP penalty to give CQP a 28-24 lead which was lost when Stirling scored their fourth try to move the score to 31-28 in their favour. Eventually with time almost up CQP moved into the Stirling twenty two and were awarded a penalty about fifteen metres out from the Stirling llne not far from being in front of the Stirling posts. The assumption from the stand was that CQP would take the easy conversion and the game would end in a draw with the pointage going 3-2 in Stirling’s favour. CQP decided to go for a try which if it had been successful would have given them victory with a four try bonus. After the ball was put into the scrum Stirling conceded a second penalty which resulted in Stirling being awarded a penalty. When the ball emerged on the Stirling side the scrum half wasted no time in directing the ball off the field and the final whistle went to give Stirling a 31-28 victory with the pointage going 5-1 in Stirling’s favour. There are bound to be different views as to whether it was the right decision to take a scrum rather than a kick. CQP had probably enjoyed a slight edge in the set piece but it was not an emphatic difference. For what it is worth the BOFS thought the decision was not unreasonable given the consequences if a try had resulted. On the day Stirling were a superior team to the Melrose team that CQP had faced the week before especially in the back division. Thierbault Pin caught the eye in this game both for his pace and his tackling.

Next up league leaders Biggar at Dumbreck. The outcome may well depend on which set of forwards can get the upper hand
