Cartha QP v Ayr Sat 19th Oct 2019. Basic errors and poor discipline cost CQP v Ayr

The match took place in dry conditions. CQP had brought Liam Howieson in at centre to replace Ryan Flett who has gone to New Zealand. Liam had been ill on the Friday which lead to Josh Mc Phail coming into the squad. Darren Knox was brought In from the bench and put into number 15
As this game progressed the CQP supporters became increasingly frustrated at the number of mistakes they were witnessing. The first two CQP penalties directed at touch both failed to reach their destination and two CQP kick offs went straight into touch. It was clear from the beginning that the CQP pack had the upper hand in the tight. In the first half this lead to a number of penalties to
CQP but as the game progressed the referee seemed to have decided that the break up in the set piece was CQP’s fault. Indeed the Ayr second try came from a penalty awarded to Ayr after their hooker was seen to pop up in the front row. Ayr took this penalty quickly and scored an unconverted try in the left corner.Ayr dominated the first few minutes of this match but it was CQP who took advantage of superiority in the scrum to score first through a try by number eight Michael Robertson. With nearly thirty minutes played Ayr hit back with a converted try and with thirty six minutes played increased their lead with a penalty conversion. Just before the half time whistle Ayr added a second try.

CQP pressed hard from the restart and were rewarded with a try by Graham Williamson. The conversion missed by a foot. With three quarters of the game played Luca who had just come on as a sub was yellow carded when the ref adjudged he had deliberately knocked on, from the touchline it looked as though he had been trying to gather the ball. Ayr converted the resultant penalty to push the score up to 18-10 in their favour. CQP tried to narrow the gap and looked as though they must score when a fine backs move to started out on the right and the final pass went to the CQP left wing who was unmarked unfortunately the pass was knocked forward and the score remained unchanged. With full time approaching CQP were awarded a penalty inside their twenty two which was reversed by the ref and Ayr took the opportunity to increase their lead to 21-10.

FT CQP 10 Ayr 21

This was just not CQP’s day. Ayr had a height advantage which made their line out secure. The advantage which CQP enjoyed in the scrum was less obvious because the ref seemed to think that the disintegration in the scrums was down to CQP foul play. From the touchline it just looked as though CQP’s scrum was much stronger than their opponents. On more than one occasion the ref reversed penalties which he had awarded to CQP. Both sides defended well with few tackles being missed. On another day the result of this game could easily go the other way.

Next Saturday sees CQP travel to Hawick for a cup match. In their last home match Hawick went down narrowly to Hawks. If CQP can eliminate the mistakes and sort out their discipline they might just cause an upset.
