The match took place in overcast conditions. Our U18s were playing GHA U18s on an adjoining pitch in front of a crowd which was larger than that watching the 1st XV.

CQP kicked off determined to eliminate the memory of the previous week’s heavy defeat at Goldenacre. CQP were in all out attack mode from the start playing fast paced rugby with confidence and no little skill. It was not long before CQP opened the scoring courtesy of Ewen Campbell. Wayne Burrows converted to give CQP an early lead. A second CQP try followed in a move started in his own half by Wayne culminating in the ball finding Sam Harrison who got over in the left corner. The try went unconverted but CQP kept up the pressure and Nathan Moffat ran in a try in the other corner. Again the try went unconverted. It took Watsonians thirty two minutes before they could get off their mark following a break out from defence leading to a try in the left corner which went unconverted. From then till the halftime whistle CQP kept up the pressure and with half time approaching the referee lost patience with Watson’s foul play in the scrum and after a succession of scrums which saw CQP denied a pushover try only because Watson’s deliberately collapsed the scrum, the ref awarded CQP a penalty try which ensured a four try bonus point. CQP could easily have been awarded a second penalty try when Nathan Moffat broke at pace down the right wing neatly chipped the full back before rounding him at which point with the ball quite clearly out of his hands he was grabbed by his collar and hauled to the ground denying him a second try. CQP completely dominated the first half and turned round 24-5 ahead.

Watson’s kicked off the second half and the ball landed in the CQP twenty two. For the entire third quarter CQP were never out of their own twenty two except when they kicked off when Watson’s scored a second try after eighteen minutes. Watson’s had clearly decided at the break that they would attack CQP with ball in hand. Their attempts to breach the CQP line however were met consistently with fierce resistance as CQP put in tackle after tackle. Slowly CQP managed to dig themselves out of defence. Watson’s ball retention was very good which in part was why CQP found it so hard to get the ball into their hands. CQP fought for every ball and eventually the final whistle went to give CQP a well deserved victory on the back of some excellent attack play in the first half and some Herculean defence in the second. As a result of this win CQP moved above Watson’s in the table. Next up Boroughmuir which will be another first time league meeting between the two clubs although we have played them in the cup in the recent past.

CQP played with great team spirit in this game. If they continue playing like they did v Watson’s they should get their fair share of victories in this league. All five subs were used. Ryan Howie apparently won the man of the match award. Perhaps a little mention for Marcus Goodwin is due. This young man playing either at a tight head prop or hooker is holding his own very well in the front row despite his young age. Generally the pack is playing very well together and the backs are showing real sharpness in attack.

A very good day at the office for CQP.
