As Club President, it’s my privilege and pleasure to welcome our supporters and visitors to today's Tennents National League Division One match at Dumbreck against Watsonians RFC. A world famous club with a wonderful rugby pedigree. Watsonians were established in 1875 and have over 70 internationalists, including five Scottish Captains and seven British Lions on their roll call of honour. The most well known in recent years being brothers Gavin and Scott Hastings.
On behalf of the Club, I am delighted to extend a very warm welcome to 1984 Grand Slam Scottish Internationalist Euan Kennedy, President of Watsonians, along with Iain Leslie, Club Secretary, other committee members and traveling support. The Watsonians team is led by Captain Chris Bell accompanied by head coach Bruce Ruthven, assistant Gordon Smith and team manager Stan Buchanan, all overseen by Director of Rugby Chris Hunter.
Watsonians and Cartha's last game of note was a closely fought Scottish Cup semi final played at Myreside on Saturday the 15th of April 2006, which was only decided in the "9th minute" of injury time. We had just been disallowed a try two minutes earlier (which the referee was happy to award, though the assistant referee wasn't) to cut a long story short, Watsonians gained a penalty 30 metres out, which was slotted over to give the home team a 21-19 victory, the final kick of the match We've long memories here at Dumbreck, we are hoping to avenge that result today!
