Musselburgh v Cartha QP 26 Jan 2019

Following good performances in recent games CQP travelled to Musselburgh with hope if not necessarily expectation. Both Ewen Campbell and Jacob Adamson were missing from the back division with Scott McInnes and Alex Boyle taking their place. Marcus Goodwin came in at tighthead with Juan Phyfer moving to the bench.

The match took place in damp conditions and Musselburgh, who had won the reverse fixture at Dumbreck 37-27, kicking off. Musselburgh came off their blocks at full pace and following a good thirty meter plus run from their number 7 Bowman they opened the scoring with a try on the left side which was converted to give them a 7 point lead which increased to 12-0 eight minutes later. Up to this point it looked as though some of the CQP team were still on the bus. CQP however slowly came into the game although they were finding it tough in the tight. Following a CQP line out CQP mounted a forward drive and got the ball down. Graham Williamson got the credit and Wayne converted with thirty minutes played. Four minutes later CQP, who were now very much in the game, saw the score moved to 12-10 to Musselburgh courtesy of a Wayne Burrows penalty.

On the resumption Juan Phyfer replaced Marcus Goodwin at tight head. It only took CQP a minute to take the lead when Chris Wicks went over near the posts. With the try converted CQP had a 17-12 lead. Fifteen minutes later CQP scored a lovely try. The move along the back line started on the right and when the ball came to Wayne the expectation was that he would pass to his left but he put a beautiful pass inside to Gregor Davidson who covered the last ten metres to score close to the posts. The try was easily converted and the CQP lead moved to 24-12. Four minutes later saw CQP get their fourth bonus point try again converted. From the start of the second half CQP had been very much in control. Musselburgh however seemed to have been stung into action and with ten minutes left scored an unconverted try. With three minutes left on the clock CQP were reduced to fourteen players when following an intervention by the touch judge Calum Dickson was red carded for throwing a punch. Calum alleged that immediately prior to this he had been kicked in the eye. As often happens Calum's retaliation had been spotted but the earlier foul play had been missed. From the resultant penalty Musselburgh pressed hard to the CQP line which they managed to get over. Held up was the decision but from the resultant scrum they crossed the CQP line to gain their fourth try and secure a losing bonus point when the try was converted.

A significant feature of this game was the CQP tackling. Once they got themselves off the bus the lads tackled fiercely and effectively. CQP got right in Musselburgh's face this effective tackling swung the game decisively in CQP's favour. It was most unfortunate that the only really controversial point in the game saw CQP concede a try which changed the pointage if not the result.

Elsewhere CQP's seconds won a tight contest v Musselburgh's seconds 19-13.
