CARTHA QP v Selkirk 22Sept 2018.

CQP refuse to give up and score three tries before the end to earn losing bonus point.

Weather conditions were quite pleasant with a modest wind blowing cross field from the Govan side. CQP conceded three penalties in the first three minutes and with only five minutes on the clock found themselves five points behind as a result of a Selkirk try in the right corner. The game then moved on with little separating the teams until Selkirk lost a forward to the sin bin after twenty minutes. Three minutes later saw CQP maul over the Selkirk line with Albert getting the touchdown. Wayne Burrrows converted and CQP had a two point lead. Selkirk regained the lead through a converted penalty in front of the posts. CQP had the opportunity to cancel that out when they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts but Wayne Burrows chose to kick the ball into touch. It fell short of the sideline and Selkirk cleared. Shortly after this CQP did retake the lead with. Fine inter passing try which ended with Jacob Adamson scoring in the right corner. The try went unconverted but CQP now lead 12-8. There had been numerous stoppages for injuries in the first half and the clock was showing 49 minutes when Selkirk got their second try which again was not converted.

HT CQP 12 Selkirk 13.

Some weak tackling early in the second half saw Selkirk increase their lead to eight points with a converted try. Shortly after this Selkirk now very much on top added their bonus point try to push the score to 25-12. Followed by their fifth try which came from a CQP line out throw that went straight into Selkirk hands and then to the touchdown, CQP reduced the leeway-with a-penalty. Selkirk then added two more unconverted tries to move them into a comfortable 40-15 lead. With the clock showing 73 minutes played CQP hit back scoring three tries in six minutes of play two of which were converted to move the acre to 40-34. The scorers were Jonny Campion, Gregor Davidson and Liam Howieson. This seemed to sting Selkirk into action and before the final whistle they ran int their final try-of the afternoon to give a score of 45-34.

This was definitely a day when the attackers got the upper hand. Given that Selkirk only converted one of their tries it has to be said that the final score flattered CQP. Selkirk were a big powerful hard running team. Once they found a way through they CQP defence they just kept up the pressure. On the day Selkirk thoroughly deserved their victory. The clubs 2nd XV's were playing each other on the next pitch and CQP emerged victorious from that encounter five tries to two. On now to game number five when we will play Dundee HS at Dumbreck.

Final result CQP 35 (1 point) Selkirk 44 (5 points ).
