The Jed pitch had been cleared by an army of club members who had started the clearance process at 4am. The snow had apparently fallen when the pitch was soft. There were still traces of snow on the pitch but CQP indicated they were happy to play.
Jed kicked off and CQP immediately conceded a penalty. With four minutes on the clock when CQP failed to find their man off their line out and JED surged through the middle to score a try which was easily converted. With only eight minutes played following the intervention of the touch judge on the far side Graham Williamson found himself red carded. It later emerged that the touch judge asserted that Graham had struck Jed player on the head with his knee. If this was correct then the probability was that it was entirely accidental. In his long and distinguished rugby career Graham has never previously been red carded. There is no doubt that this event severely hampered CQP’s chances of getting something from this game. The first fifteen minutes were dominated by Jed but with twenty four minutes played CQP opened their account with a successful penalty by Wayne Burrows and followed this up with another six minutes later. Jed responded immediately and scored a second try in the corner which went unconverted. Just before the break CQP had the misfortune to see a clearance kick charged down and two minutes later Jed scored a third try to move the score to 19 -6 at the break.
With four minutes of the second half played Scott McInnes replaced Gregor Davidson. Scott moved into the centre and Wayne moved into a to stand off. With eleven minutes played Jed got their try bonus from open play and the score moved to 24-6. On the sixteenth minute Jed went down to fourteen players when their number 6 was yellow carded.Just past the twenty minute mark Ewen Campbell intercepted a Jed pass and ran in from just about twenty five metres to score between the posts. The converted try moved the score to 24 -13. Shortly after this Andy Scott sustained an injury and was replaced by Graeme Docherty. Jed increased their lead to 29-13 with a well taken try by left winger Young. The game moved on and just before the end Jed got their final try which they converted to leave the FT score at 36-13.
Throughout this match CQP played some attractive rugby against a team with a 100 per cent home record currently sitting second top in the league and almost certain to be competing in a play off to go into the premiership. Indeed despite the margin of their defeat CQP can be proud of this performance. Next up Selkirk at home. Fingers crossed .
