The match was played in fine conditions with CQP playing with the sun at their backs. Throughout the first half Wayne Burrows tried to take advantage of the sun's position often putting the Selkirk fullback under pressure trying to retrieve the high ball with the sun in his eyes

After only four minutes of play Selkirk opened their account with a try by Ross Nixon converted by stand off Rory Banks.

The game then progressed with both teams trying to gain the upper hand and with twenty nine minutes on the clock Selkirk kicked a successful penalty to push their lead up to ten points. CQP then hit back with two tries in quick succession. The first from close quarters by Andrew McDougall and the second from Anthony Nyangweso after some neat dummying by Wayne Burrows. Wayne converted both tries.
This was followed by a second try for Selkirk courtesy of Josh Welsh. Again the try was converted and Selkirk were back in the lead.
CQP got back on level terms through a successful penalty but just before the break Selkirk reestablished their lead with a third try. The ref indicated that he had awarded the try but the touch judge then called him. The consequence of this was a questionable yellow card for Wayne Burrows apparently for tackling without arms. From the touchline however the incident looked slightly different. The Selkirk player on the ball charged forward and lowered his shoulder crashing Wayne onto his backside. The reality was that Wayne never had a chance of getting his arms round the attacker.

HT SELKIRK 24- CQP 17

The score moved to 27-17 in Selkirk's favour before they added a fourth try courtesy of Hendrie. CQP however showed their fighting spirit with a converted try by Grarme Docherty but with seventy minutes played Selkirk virtually put the result beyond doubt with a fifth try.

CQP kept plugging away and were rewarded at the death with a last play try following a penalty directed into touch. CQP drove over and Juan Phyfer got the credit. This try went unconverted but it didn't really matter as CQP's perseverance had gained them a well earned four try bonus.

A neutral would probably have taken the view that Selkirk deserved their victory. The principal difference in the two teams probably lay in the ability to penetrate the opposition defence. In addition Selkirk had the best player on the park in Wagman who was dangerous every time he got the ball in his hands. Up front there was little between the teams but CQP seemed to have a slight advantage in the tight.

CQP now move on to a home game against Musselburgh next Saturday. Both teams are likely to regard this match as a must win. Although CQP have suffered four defeats they have managed to grab a point in three of these results. At the end of the season these points may prove to have substantial value.
