Dundee Rugby v Cartha Queens Park April 16th 2022.

This postponed match took place at Morgan Academy’s ground as Mayfield apparently was being used by the school and was not available. The pitch which slopes from one side to the other was in poor condition and with rusting posts was unattractive.

CQP needed to win this game to enable them to remain in National 1. The omens were not good when Dundee took a 3 nil lead after only three minutes of play. The CQP kick off went straight into touch leading to a halfway line scrum to Dundee the resultant scrum saw Dundee drive CQP back leading to a Dundee penalty. After eight minutes Dundee increased their lead to ten nil when a weak defence saw them breach the CQP line for a converted try. Shortly after this a collapsed CQP scrum lead to a penalty to Dundee which in turn saw them move the ball out to the wing for a converted try and a seventeen point lead.

CQP were clearly struggling in the set piece. After nineteen minutes CQP got on the board with a well worked try scored by Pat O'Brien on the left wing. Wayne Burrows potted the conversion and the score moved to 17-7 in favour of the home side. With half an hour played Dundee we’re awarded a penalty which they put into touch. Dundee caught their own line out ball and drove over for an unconverted try. Thirty seven minutes in saw Dundee awarded another penalty which lead to a bonus point unconverted try to leave the halftime score at 27-7 to Dundee. CQP showed a more lively side at the beginning of the second half with a converted try by Ethan Paterson to move the score to 27-14. This was followed by a third try for CQP scored by Turkey. With the try unconverted the score moved to 27-19 and the CQP support began to think that all was not lost. Unfortunately this third try seemed to persuade Dundee to put their foot on on the gas.

Dundee then found themselves down to fourteen players when one of their players was red carded after twelve minutes of second half play. Unfortunately CQP could not take advantage of this and before the final whistle Dundee had added two more unconverted tries to make the final score Dundee 40 CQP 19.

CQP now have one game left against Heriots at Dumbreck. Following Heriots away victory at Netherdale they will be coming to Dumbreck determined to win and secure top spot in National One and a place in the premier division next season.
